Jesse Talbot vive a Los Angeles con la sua amante. Ha un buon lavoro, un bell’appartamento ed è innamoratissima. E’nata e cresciuta ad Amarillo, in Texas, in una famiglia battista, e ha avuto un’educazione rigidamente religiosa. Jesse e la madre Maria non si parlano da otto anni. Il fratello Clay è l’unico legame di Jesse con il passato. Clay, per convincere la sorella ad aiutarlo a trasferirsi a Los Angeles, le racconta una bugia,  cioè che la madre sarebbe pronta a riconciliarsi con lei. Così Jesse inizia un lunghissimo viaggio, mille miglia da Los Angeles ad Amarillo, pronta ad affrontare i demoni dell’infanzia e a chiudere per sempre il più triste capitolo della sua vita.
